The master bath is long overdue. It is our last major project inside and it will be a big one. We are talking complete gut job. This week we ordered (online) the new tub and it should arrive sometime this week. We were really concerned because it needs to be 48" vice the standard 60" and we thought it would need to be specially ordered therefore it would be a "special" price, namely damn expensive. So we were pleasantly surprised to find a 48" non-special order.
The floor is narrowed down to probably a hex pattern in either marble or white ceramic tile. We really like the Calacatta Marble but don't like the price. Carrera Marble is less expensive but is more gray, reminds me of tombstones. White ceramic tile is the least expensive but..... it is white ceramic tile.
Today we began the demo by removing the existing cabinet and true to our style we put in a temporary solution. Not in the photo is a small three drawer cabinet to the left of the desk. This is good because we can begin to understand what we might really need in the way of storage. The cabinet came out really easy.
Of course with an old house you never really know what you might get. Apparently when the previous owner last remodeled they installed the cabinet and then poured a top coat of concrete about 1" thick. Did I mention that they did that AFTER they installed the cabinet!!! So now we have a nice depression in our bathroom floor. I am all for learning new things, but c'ome on man.
As for the other project, we met with a general contractor company to bid out the outside work:
- Demo and rebuild the north wall and build a wooden fence with gate.
- Build a roof over our back patio.
- do something with our back patio. He suggested building a wooden deck over it.
- Replace the driveway.
- Re-surface the garage floor.
- Build two gates for the courtyard entrance.
Had to shim the legs for the desk |

If I recall, a wooden deck was my vote too back when we demo's the existing pergola. I think it would be cheaper than jack hammering the existing concrete and re pouring concrete. Given how harsh the climate is there on wood, not to mention termites. I would use either composite or a really hard wood per the Janka Hardness test. If I had the money for my deck, I would use Ipe and Tigerwood. I'm not a huge fan of composites because most of them look exactly like what they are - plastic, but some of the higher end ones are decent looking. The problem is that composites cost as much as the two woods I listed. Keep us posted.
Does it mean you have to pour the concrete to the (NICE) depression space? Don't forget goggles and mask!
Tank.62- Your vote was correct. And they seem they gonna do some more! They are really challengers, and you too.
Tank- You are correct, you did recommend the deck. Also our neighbor across the street also mentinoed it before. We are not 100% on going that way yet. We will not demo the concrete, too much money. We wanted to strip the paint off and stain it. But it might be in too bad of shape.
K- Yes we have to pour concrete in the depression. Thinking of it makes me depressed. LOL.
