Houston, we have mold
This morning the plumber came to bury the pipes into the wall. That went pretty smooth and it took him only 1 hour to finish. If it had been me, probably 8 hours and 4 trips to Home Depot. So emboldened by the progress, we decided to do a little demo with the help from one of our friends. That went easy until we took off the 2nd wall cabinet and discovered (gasp!!) mold. I don't think it is too bad, but the problem is now the entire floor must come up because we do not know how far it has spread. To make matters worse, the 1st layer of linoleum is at least 40 years old and the backing is a type of burlap. So of course that compounds the mold problem. On the other side of the wall is a shower, so now this gives us something else to do, like we really need that.

So, you plan to lay something damp-proof material under
the floor of office room. It'll be another heavy DIY but,
as you say, you have to do it so that you can use the
office room comfortably with no worry about mold.
You don't have rain often, so there would not be much
humidity coming from underground, I guess.
I don't think it would be the moisture coming from underground. I think the problem is the shower next to the kitchen.
But you are correct another heavy DIY. :(
It’s a good thing you found that mold when you did! Hopefully, it hadn’t spread very far and the growth was easy to remove and stop. It might have been advisable at the time to search the rest of the house for other places that might have mold, so as to stop it from spreading.
The mold on the wall was just surface and it came off easily. The floor turned out not to be mold but actually tar paper that they used to create the moisture barrier. I initially thought it was mold because it was black and didn't smell real good. I will say the tar paper was very hard to remove.
